A thing about people

When life comes down to it’s very end, people seem to have a very widely-accepted-belief about what was or should have been more important in their lives.

Specifically the virtues of love, laughter, and happiness.

Despite different accomplishments, experiences, and perspectives, people from all facets of life have always confided in me these virtues as a means to a standard for which I should judge my daily actions.

Although I may have only been able to first-hand garner the experience of those who died in my lifetime, I feel confident in assuming that these virtues have been widely idolized on the deathbeds of people of all generations and centuries.

Yet… generation after generation… century after century… We find ourselves living in a world where these virtues serve to be the most counter-productive in the journey to what we mainstream define as “success”.

Why could it be that we never learn to take the life advice of our ancestors and continue to make the same mistakes throughout the ages of empires rising and falling? Perhaps that is the nature of humans?

Our desire for conquering and dominating outweighs our desire to simply be at serenity. The desire to satisfy our greed outshines the desire to progress the quality of life for our species and neighboring inhabitants.

Cause let’s be honest, at the end of the day, who’s wins and losses are the most important to YOU? For me, it is definitely mine. Most people probably have a similar thought process, and realistically, it is usually these type of people that find themselves ultimately in a position of power.

And it is probably due to our failure to overcome such selfishness that our race finds itself in a continued cycle of happiness, love, and laughter lost and under appreciated.

You know what the most suffocating thing about living in any major industrialized metropolis is?

You can never see the stars.

There is something so humbling and liberating about being able to see what is out in the vast universe. And to be able to see it every night would be such a convenient and refreshing reminder that there are bigger things and questions to seek out than myself. Perhaps, such a perspective would push me to look further within than out. Who knows… It’s been such a long time since I have last seen the dark skies illuminated by all the beauty and chaos out beyond our very own horizon.
